Update on the 1st place story

We were on the news's website.

Westmoore Band Captures Captions

The Westmoore High School Jaguar Marching Band stole the show Saturday, 6 October, at the University of Central Oklahoma Marching Band Festival. Marching contests are judged in three areas: Music, Visual and General Effect. The Pride of Westmoore got the highest total score in the preliminaries and also won all three Caption awards with high individual scores in Music, Visuals and General Effect.

The rules for judging are on the OKBandMasters.com website and are quite complex. Needless to say, these honors are the results of many hours of practice in the band room each morning, the high school parking lot most afternoons combined with performances at football game half-time shows and participation in other contests.

It was a crazy day in Edmond with sprinkles on and off all afternoon. With a break after the prelims the bands got to re-group and then the rains came. Three bands got to march in finals before the remainder of the show had to be cancelled. We were all soaked to the skin at that point. Safety of the kids is paramount in these events.

The Westmoore Band was awarded the 1997 Sudler Flag of Honor. This is the nation's most prestigious award for high school concert bands. It identifies, recognizes, and honors high school band programs throughout the United States, Canada and Japan that have demonstrated particularly significant high standards of excellence in concert activities over a period of several years. Westmoore High School was one of four high school bands in the entire nation to receive the Sudler Flag of Honor.

The Westmoore Marching Band has received superior ratings at OSSAA State Marching contest for nineteen consecutive years and has been a finalist at the Oklahoma Bandmasters Association Marching Championship for the past eighteen consecutive years. The band received Second Place trophies for Prelims and Finals at the Owasso Invitational Marching contest the previous weekend.

The band is in final preparation for its trip to the Bands of America Super-Regional competition in St Louis, 19-20 October and will pit their skills against fifty other bands from across the country.
